What is the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductor?

The band gap in intrinsic semiconductor is large in comparison to extrinsic semiconductor. The extrinsic semiconductor are doped with donors electrons or holes (n and p type) that are just near the conduction band and valence band respectively narrowing the band gap. The charge carriers majority electrons or holes in n and p type respectively conduct with least thermal energy as the band gap is very small.pic taken from gemologyproject.com
