There are two components to the Earth's magnetic field. We are normally refering to the horizontal component as we would normally use a compass to identify the north which is the direction the horizontal component vector. We do not normally refer to the vertical component eventhough it does exist. Be very careful to take note that the Earth's magnetic field is not what the compass shows us.The compass just does part of the job by showing only the horizontal component.
