Work done against frictional forces is the term used in many examination question . Work is done by the system because the frictional forces are external forces on the object.
(ii) question is work done on the system is definitely not true and hence warrant a negative sign.
I must say this negative sign is unnecessary if the question is asked in the positive sense to avoid being petty.
