Fundamentals : Change in momentum

The change in momentum is equal to force x time of impact. ( from newton's second law )

A car crash into tree. The driver survived. Explain.
The change in momentum of the car and driver is very large due to the speed the car is traveling. The force exerted on the car + driver can be small if the time of impact is prolonged if the tree 'bend' like a coconut tree.

This principle is applied to many scenarios:
1. a fall from the fifth floor
2. car crash into crash barrier
3. safety feature of car : air bag, crumple zone and seat-belt
