First encounter with quantum physics is light exist as photons, a unit of light energy. Its value can be calculated if the frequency of light is known. Energy of a photon = hf. Layman uses photon to signify a single coloured light. LEd today can give light of specific colour (frequency)and therefore the term photonics.
